A Weston College Production Arts student had an amazing experience as a make-up artist on the Weston-super-Mare-based Sky TV comedy series ‘The Cafe’.

Natalie Allan, 20, who previously attended Backwell School, spent six weeks on the set which TV’s Royle Family comedy stars, Ralf Little and Craig Cash, as well as Weston-born writer Michelle Terry.

The Level 3 BTEC student, of Goddard Drive, Weston, said: “Working on film and in TV is my dream job so when I saw the filming vehicles arrive I went down and gave in my name.

“I was asked for my CV then they offered me the job. They built the cafe for the series and everyone was so kind.

“It was a brilliant, fun experience. I learned a lot and this has made me more determined to use my qualifications to work in this industry.”

The Cafe’ centres on the lives of customers in a small seaside town and a second series is set to be filmed in the town this summer.

Other Weston College staff also appeared on set and behind the scenes, including Performing Arts Lecturer Lisa Smith who had a supporting artist role and Production Arts Lecturer Sue Skinner who helped with make-up and hair.

Sue, who worked alongside Natalie on the set has been in the TV and film industry for 30 years. She was part of the team on the Casualty TV series that won a BAFTA for make-up in 1991.

Sue said: “I started my studies at Weston College in 1976 and I can see Natalie is committed in her pursuit to become a make-up artist; she has the talent and skill to fulfil her ambition.”
